Why are Golden Retrievers so popular?

The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular dogs in the United States. They rank fourth in popularity after the Labrador retriever, Yorkshire terrier, and German shepherd. In fact, until a few years ago if you wanted to get one from a kennel or a rescue center, it was almost impossible to get one because nobody wanted to give up their golden retrievers.

The Golden Retriever has a very unique temperament; he is both very active and patient, very boisterous and very loving and caring. In fact, the golden retriever exploded in popularity as a retrieving dog that was comfortable on both land and water due to this unique trait. They could sit patiently beside their master hunter for hours on end without making a sound as they waited for game and then burst into activity to search for fallen birds.

This character makes them very calm indoors and you will very rarely find a golden retriever wandering around inside the house. They tend to do all of their exercise like we do, compressed into a short amount of time. This means that you can take your dog for a morning run or to the park for an hour a day and that is enough to keep him happy throughout the day.

They are also very loving and affectionate dogs and Golden Retrievers have been known to adopt little ones from other animals. Sometimes they even go so far as to breastfeed for them, even if they are not nursing mothers at the time. This shows the extent to which they can care for others and many people find owning a golden retriever much cheaper and sometimes more effective than a babysitter.

The main reason for their popularity is that children love them. The Goldies will be both playmates and babysitters and will play with them all day. They have a very soft corner for children and will tolerate almost anything they do without so much as a whimper. If you have a child, get one and you will see, you will be hooked.

Goldie needs a certain amount of care for her coat, but a good vigorous brushing every week should be more than enough. Apart from this, they do not require anything in terms of maintenance. They are also a very healthy breed and do not suffer from many of the problems that plague other purebred dogs.
