World of Warcraft Jewelry

The art of jewelry is taking very precious gemstones and refining them to unleash their full potential. It requires the expansion, The Burning Crusade, to learn and is a very powerful profession. Jewelers can create both precious gems (which can be set into items) and amazing jewelry.

Jewelry is a primary skill, which means it counts toward the two profession limit. Keep this in mind when you start making jewelry, because if you unlearn it to dedicate yourself to another profession, your jewelry knowledge will be reset to zero should you decide to retake it.

Jewelry is a production business skill, which means that it takes raw items collected from the world (gems, stones, metals) and turns them into refined items (refined gems, necklaces, statuettes, etc.). To get the most out of jewelry, you will have to go into mining.

Starting

Range name required

Level Skill Levels Learner

5 1-75 Official

10 50-150 Expert

20125-225 Craftsman

40200-300 Master (Burning Crusade)

50 300-375

To get started, look for one to learn the profession. The best places to find one would be the Exodar (for the Alliance) and Silvermoon City (for the Horde), both of which require expansion. When you arrive in town, simply speak to a guard and ask where the jewelry profession trainer is and they will mark your map.

Once you have found a trainer, interact with him (right click) and choose to train the jewelry apprentice. Congratulations! You are officially a jewelry store! I strongly suggest that you go into mining at the same time that you will need it to search for gems from the mineral and gather the materials necessary to create items with jewelry.

Any class and race can acquire jewelry and make a profit, although certain ranks require certain levels. Not only that, but to obtain the final rank (Master) one must venture into Outland, which requires a character of at least level 58.

Any character of any class or race can choose Journeyman Jewelcrafting as long as their account is enabled for “The Burning Crusade”. To advance beyond that, you will have to have the required level. The last level, Master, is currently available to level 50 players, but the only known trainers are in Outland (requires level 58).

Choose a second profession

It is not necessary to list the other professions as only one applies to jewelry. That only profession is mining. Jewelry uses metals and gems found in various metal nodes all over the earth and you will always benefit as long as you can source the materials yourself. Not only that, but having mining allows you to use the prospecting skill.

Jeweler’s

Jewelry is a fairly easy skill to use. Just open your spell book and search for “Jewelry”. From here, select what you want to create and then choose “Create.” You can use the slider to create multiple at the same time, if you like. If you have the materials available, a bar will appear informing you that the article is currently being created. If you want to cancel during this time, just move your character. If it fails due to movement, you will not lose any material.

Improving jewelry craftsmanship is easy. If it is orange, you will get a skill point in jewelry. If it’s yellow in color, you’ll have a decent change to increase your skill. If it is green, you will have little chance of increasing your skill. Gray items do not award skill points.

A good number of jewelry items are “linked at pickup”, which means that the items created are just for you. This makes it a worthy skill to have when you are leveling up because you will have some useful items (rings, necklaces, etc.) and you will have Mining, which is already a great source of profit.

A quick note, some items may require a “Jeweler’s Kit” and / or a “Simple Grinder”. These items are available for sale from certain Jewelcrafter instructors and vendors.

Jewels and gems

Gems are found in two ways. One is that they can be made by taking a gem and refining it with jewelry skill. The second is to buy it from various NPC vendors (which may or may not be controlled by reputation). The first method is great for producing very fine refined gems from gemstones, while the second is great for putting in filler equipment or anything you find that needs a gem but doesn’t need something too expensive.

Your base gems can currently increase the following:

Attack, Power, Strength, Parry, Dodge, Heal, Spell, Damage Spell, Critical Rating, Hit, Rating, Critical, Attack Rating, Intellect, Defense Rating, Stamina, Stamina, Spirit Spell, Penetration, Mana every 5 seconds Gem combo can include resistances, speed enhancement, chance to stun or restore health in a melee attack, reduced threat, and more. There are advanced colors such as orange, green and purple that combine two bonuses (mixing colors). Meta gems are combinations of many gems and include the most powerful bonuses.

The jewelry comes in various rings, necklaces, trinkets, and statues. The newest item on this list, the statues, are similar to the shaman’s totems and provide throbbing healing to the jeweler for a short period of time. Rings, necklaces, and trinkets are very powerful and their low-level creations are extremely viable.

Plugs

Items with plugs that drop from various powerful enemies are generally more powerful than their normal counterparts due to having the ability to upgrade with gems. Sockets are not randomly added to equipment, but rather are assigned to items beforehand as if they were part of the item’s stats. There are four types of plugs: blue, red, yellow and the rare meta. The first three can accept gems of any color except meta (but get a bonus for entering a cavity of the same color). Meta gems are the only ones that accept meta gems that are reserved for some of the most powerful equipment out there (due to the cutting power meta gems contain).

The gems are placed in the sockets through the socket interface. Just right-click on any item with available plugs to open the interface. The interface is easy to use, just drag and drop your gems into any available socket. Once they have been inserted, they cannot be removed. You can overwrite them with a new gem, but you cannot delete them and keep the original gem.

If you fill each socket with the gem of the appropriate color (for example, red with red, blue with blue), you will get the Socket Bonus that comes with the item. In the screenshot above, if you place a red gem and a blue gem, you will get 3 additional spirits.

Prospecting

If you have mining, are level 5 and have jewelry (up to a skill level of 20), then you can learn the prospecting skill. Basically, you can take 5 identical minerals and combine them into 0-2 gems that would normally be found at that metal’s node.

For example, you can get 0 to 2 Malachite from 5 copper ores. It’s a nice trade-off, especially if you don’t need the metal and need more gems! Although it depends on the market. Take the value of 1 of the gems you need and compare it to 5 of those minerals. If it is cheaper to sell the mineral and buy the gem, then go that way.
