These days, the number of overweight people is increasing rapidly, and many people who fall into this category would like to do something about it. However, not everyone is sure how to lose weight.

A key component to any plan is weight loss workouts. Good workouts will consist of several different parts to maximize the effectiveness of the workout and give you the best results. Good weight loss workouts will include both cardiovascular (or aerobic) exercises and weight training. The cardiovascular component consists of at least thirty minutes three times a week of exercise that increases your heart rate and makes you breathe harder, such as walking, swimming, running, dancing, or other such exercises. If thirty minutes is too much at first, build up.

Cardio burns the most calories per amount of time you exercise. However, you will also want to do weight training. There are a couple of reasons for this.

First, muscle burns more calories than fat just to maintain them, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn at any given time, even when you’re not exercising. You will also burn calories while lifting weights. It’s best to focus on compound exercises (those that work multiple parts of the body at once) that work the major muscles (those in the arms, legs, and core).

Interval training can be a way to get your weight loss workouts even more effective. You can use this method for cardio and weight training exercises. In general, work harder for a short interval (maybe a minute) and then work at a lower intensity to rest for a few minutes. You keep alternating between harder and easier intervals throughout your workout. This raises your heart rate higher and increases the benefits of training.

There are a number of good exercises available for free, either on cable or over the Internet. You can also buy exercise videos to use, or books or e-books that describe workouts if you’re not familiar enough with the various types of exercises to design your own workout. You should vary your workouts and not just do the same workout over and over for long periods. At least once a month, switch up your training to increase the effectiveness of your exercise efforts.
